I’ve been itching to dye some white sock yarn I had, so I can knit some pretty socks, and I happened to have the house to myself today so I decided to have a big dye day. I spent quite a bit of time this morning skeining the yarn, I ended up only having enough for two pairs of socks, made me a little sad.
Then I decided on colors. I knew I wanted something green and brown and something purple, so I set off to begin.

Here’s the first skein I dyed. I put these pictures backwards by progress, so starting from the right I took my skein of yarn and laid it out on a piece of plastic and sprinkled it with some orange dye. This color is mostly yellow with a touch of red and it looks much brighter before the dye is set. I let that sit for about ten minutes and then put the yarn in the dye pot with some avocado green dye, the dye was leftover from the bright green I dyed for my mittens. I sprinkled some black and brown dye powder on top and let the yarn simmer for about half an hour and the left picture is how it looks when it was done.
I have to admit that I was pretty scared while this was dyeing, it looked really dark and muddy and I thought it would be too dark, but once all the dye had soaked up and it dried some, it looked much better. I’m very happy with how this came out. I love the variation and depth of color and I think I’ll find a sock pattern to cast on as soon as this is dry.

Next was the purple. With this I wanted a semi-solid purple with areas of very dark and lighter purple colors, the black just sort of happened on the fly. I took a dowel and laid it across the top of my dye pot and laid the skein of yarn on top of it, so only half the yarn was immersed in the dye. I left it like that for about twenty minutes and then put the other half into the dye and left it until the water was clear. I then decided it was too bright, so I mixed a three parts black to one part sky blue and squeezed it in spots on the yarn, heavier in places and lighter in other places and then I let the pot sit until the water was clear again. I got the black dye too heavy in a few places on the yarn and I’m afraid it’s going to pool, but I like how it looks, there’s a lot more subtle variation than the picture shows.

This, well, lets just say I got bored and felt like experimenting. I had a ton of leftover orange dye after doing the green yarn and I didn’t want to save it since I don’t use much orange, and I hated to just pour it out. I decided to experiment. I took a ball of Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool and I put it in the pot with the orange dye and sprinkled some brown powder on top and let it sit until all the dye had been absorbed, it took almost an hour. On the left is how it looks now. The yarn is still really wet and I’m going to wait for it to dry more until I skein it but I think it looks pretty interesting. The dye took darker on the outside and lighter on the inside of the ball and the brown didn’t penetrate into the ball at all, so it gradates from darker to lighter in the ball, as far as I can tell, anyway.
Today was fun, I really need to dye more often but I never have the time to do it. I’m not home alone much anymore and it’s just too hard to try to dye around someone else. I wish I had a dedicated workspace.
