This weekend I finished up the bamboo I started spinning Friday. This weighs about an ounce and I ended up with a touch over 88yds of two ply sport/DK weight yarn. I’m honestly not sure if I like it or not, I think I should have just spun a low twist single instead of plying, not only would I have more yardage but it would have been a lot easier (bamboo is kind of a pain to spin). It is what it is, though, and the yarn is a lot prettier, softer, shinier in person than it looks in this picture.
No spinning today, it’s the rest day, but I have been a little productive. Last summer (or was it last fall? Don’t remember) I washed a bag of Romney fleece, a little less than a pound of it, and I started fluffing it to prepare to spin. The fleece is still mostly in lock form and I read that it’s easier to card if you pick the fleece first. Since I don’t have a picker (though I wouldn’t mind having one, they’re really expensive), I did it manually, just fluffing the locks and picking out some VM and I only managed half the fleece, I’ll get the rest tomorrow. I would love to be able to knit a February Lady Sweater with this, the wool is so soft and I think it would make a great cardigan if I could get the yarn weight right, but I don’t have enough fleece to spin enough yarn for the sweater. I’ll need at least a pound, maybe a little more, and I have a little over 10oz total. I have a little white Merino I could blend with the Romney or I may even have enough angora and cashmere to make up the difference. Doesn’t that sound nice? A Romney/Angora/Cashmere sweater, even if there’s only a tiny bit of cashmere. I think tomorrow I’ll get out my Angora and see how much I have and maybe sample a the Romney/Angora mix to see how it spins up. I just wish I had a drum carder, it would make processing the fleece so much faster.
