Scarf

Today went by fast.  Things are looking better outside, the sun came out for a little while and some of the snow has melted, my road is clear now but the driveway is a sheet of ice, and it’s actually above freezing for the first time this week.

I’ve been spending my days knitting on my mom’s scarf (while I do other things, too) and it is growing fast.  I’m starting to run a bit low on yarn but I think it will end up a decent length, I’m not going to worry about it anyway.  Everything about this scarf makes me so happy.  I love the yarn, it’s soft, it’s fairly even, the heathered color is beautiful in a rustic way, I love the pattern and the stitch definition and the softness of the fabric.  I wish I could reach out through the computer and let you all feel it.

Roving

This afternoon I thought I would try a little experiment.  I mixed some superwash wool, Ingeo (it’s fake snow made out of corn) and some sparkle tensil stuff I bought at the craft store (it’s like fake icicycle stuff) on my hackle and corespun it on crochet cotton.  The yarn is bumpy and fuzzy and soft but it’s still drying so I’ll take a picture of it next week.  the yarn itself my not turn out all the great but the roving is really pretty.

I’ll leave you with a short video of how Sally spends her day.  She likes to sit at the window and watch the neighbors or people walk by and she tries really hard not to bark at them.

Snow Day

Here’s a few pictures I took today outside in the snow.  Back to knitting tomorrow!

It’s a Start

Start of a Scarf

There is good and bad today.  First the good, I started the scarf and it rocks.  Check out that stitch definition, that’s why I went through all the trouble of spinning a three ply yarn- for those cables to pop you need a round yarn and to get a round yarn you have to have at least three plies.  The fabric is soft enough that it could be used as pillow, actually it would make a really nice blanket, it would be all warm and soft and snuggly.  I went with the Fair Isle Jazz pattern that I wrote about yesterday and this is almost two repeats of the cable pattern.  I’m having some misgivings though, the scarf is coming out a little wide, which is fine, but I’m worried about running out of yarn.  My plan is to finish this second repeat and then weigh what I’ve knit and weigh the rest of my yarn and try to work out how many more repeats I can do with the yarn I have.  If it won’t be a good length I’ll either have to frog it and think of something else or spin more of the yarn (luckily I have another 8oz of this fiber but I really didn’t want to have to use it).

Ice Storm

We started getting sleet and snow last night and it’s continued today.  This is the view out my bedroom window this morning the road is still covered in ice and since the temperature isn’t supposed to get above freezing until Friday this won’t be melting anytime soon.  We’re lucky, south of here they got two to three inches of ice and they have no power.  Our electricity is on, we’re fairly warm but we won’t be leaving the house any time soon, you just can’t get down our road.  I’m guzzling coffee to keep warm and knitting to keep busy and we’ll be fine here.

Here’s a view of the storm last night:

I’ll have another scarf update tomorrow!

Yarn!

Hand Spun Yarn

I seriously thought about calling this entry “OMG SOFT!!! drooldrooldrool” but thought that would be a bit much even if it is what I think when I touch this yarn.  I guess I could call it “OMG SLEET!!! fuckfuckfuck” since we’re supposed to get an inch or two of ice, snow and sleet by Wednesday.  Back to the snuggly yarny goodness, this is 400-ish yards of Rambouillet/Llama, three ply, about 11WPI and fluffy as a cloud and soft as a baby’s bottom.  The plan was to knit Forbes Forest with this yarn and I cast on, knit a repeat of the pattern and found my scarf was a whopping 24 inches wide.  Looks like my stitch gauge is a little off.  So my next plan was to knit just the cable portion of Fair Isle Jazz (both are from Scarf Style) and see how that turns out.  I’ve already cast on and knit almost one repeat and it’s still a little wide but it looks perfect.  The stitch definition is really good (thanks to the three ply yarn) and the fabric is nice and drapey and soft and has a slight halo.  I think this will make a good scarf.  Too bad I have to give it away.

I’ll try to get a picture of my progress tomorrow but I’m not making any promises.  The weather is getting really bad and the local news says that power outages will be wide spread tonight and tomorrow so blogging will all depend on the state of my electricity and the weather.  *Sigh*
